John Huddart was born in Lewisham, SE London. After a settled ten years in what was then a quiet backwater of the capital, his family took him to Eastbourne, on the south coast.

There the sixties passed and a grammar school education, and things slipped away: his father, when he was 16, and childhood…….. Then came University, and a desire to move North – the north of his mother, and his father’s forebears.

There he started a career as a teacher in Cheshire in the liberal seventies, and the Thatcherite eighties, and eventually an engagement with writing, via the National Writing Project.

Then Northumberland, and marriage, and children,which has come to be the biggest part of life, in every sense.
